About Sophia Mitchell
A native of Rendville, Ohio, Sophia Mitchell was deeply committed to strengthening her community through leadership, service, and economic growth. Her entrepreneurial work and involvement in local businesses supported Rendville’s economy, while her advocacy for equality, civil rights, and expanded opportunities-especially for women and families-helped shape the town’s civic life.
In 1969, Mitchell was appointed mayor of Rendville, becoming the first African American woman to serve as a mayor in Ohio. She continued to lead for at least two additional terms, often stepping forward when leadership was needed. Founded in 1879 and known for its progressive integration and strong African American community, Rendville was shaped by leaders like Sophia Mitchell, whose vision and dedication laid the foundation for lasting unity and progress.
