Construction on the additional platform within the bell tower is nearly complete. This was added as part of the stair replacement within the bell tower. You can see the first set of original stairs. They will remain in place and receive some additional steel bracing and new safety hand rails. Where the ladder is sitting now will have a “ships ladder” installed to continue up to what used to be the first level. This will be much safer for further maintenance needs and normal operations of the historic clock. The original steel stair curved around the interior wall and was fastened to the brick walls. Nothing about those worn-out 138 year old fasteners it would give a reasonable person the confidence that it would not completely collapse under your body weight.
