We are making every effort to preserve and restore our courthouse to original conditions where possible. Our wood restoration will include maintaining the faux painting. This is referred to as “graining” (thank you Bob Loversidge). The woodwork is being sanded, major dents and gouges filled. Not making a perfectly smooth finish, we wanted to maintain some natural vintage quality. After sanding a base paint coat, the new “graining” is painted on. The pics are progress in the common pleas courtroom. We found an artist with this talent in Galoplis. Two reasons for this finish: one- its original; two- it is the most economical option. Angel Seurkamp was also correct- this method was used originally because lower quality wood was used. Several species of wood were used, most likely harvested and milled locally. Graining provided the original architect the ability to showcase a beautiful wood grain look in our Courthouse. That is the historic quality we are going to preserve.
