The new elevator tower is built. Obviously, it’s a concrete block tower. The elevator car, once installed, will have a door on two sides. The south entrance will be the public access side. The north side will be reserved for individuals that are getting escorted into the courtroom.
Just one point to remember about all the elevator demolition and reconstruction work:
All this concrete debris taken out, and blocks and mortar brought in, is carried out and in by hand. We are working inside a building. Everything has to be “carried” through a doorway, and as you can see, we had to remove a lot of jack arch bricks and steel from two floors to make this opening for the elevator. Now you can better understand why the commissioners of the 1950s decided to use half the staircase opening for the elevator location. Even if, from the outside, it looks like not much is happening, you know better.
