Jack arches in our original courthouse construction have been holding up the floors for 137 years. Some of them are suffering! Looking up from the bottom, it appears there is no mortar between the bricks. There isn’t- not like a brick wall. They were stacked dry in an “arch” between the I-beams using a wooden form. The form was slid along the length as bricks were stacked. Then, a material that passed as concrete was poured on top to create the floor and give it the weight needed to hold it all together. So much to show you and talk about with this component of our work.
