The coroner’s office is responsible for providing independent, impartial reporting and verdicts on deaths within the county’s jurisdiction that fall under the “coroner’s statute” (Ohio Revised Code 313.12). In these reports, it is the coroner’s responsibility to determine things such cause of death, time of death, and identification of the deceased. These reports are then made available to the public, provided any associated court cases have been closed.
Also included in coroner’s duties are notifying next-of-kin of the deceased’s passing, taking custody of the body of the deceased until such time that they may be released to next-of-kin, and issuing death certificates.
